Now Taurine from NOW - 100 ea. 500 mg. capsules
Taurine is a sulfonic acid which is sometimes referred to as a conditional amino acid. It is found naturally in most tissues throughout the nervous system. Taurine provides a stabilizing function in the cell membranes and assists in the transport of potassium, calcium, sodium, and magnesium in and out of the cells. Taurine helps generate and regulate nerve impulses, aids the maintenance of fluid balance, and is used by the body in the visual pathways as well as in the brain and nervous system where it works with glycine and GABA as a neurotransmitter. It is found in large amounts in the brain, retina, heart, and blood cells called platlets.
Taurine is often found in currently popular energy drinks and may be included in some other supplement compounds. The best food source is meat and fish and excess taurine is excreted by the kidneys. It has a number of dietary supplement uses and seems to help with high blood pressure and calming the syspathetic nervous system. It is sometimes recommended for exercise programs but its efficacy in this regard is limited and we suggest that you contact a physician before using it for this purpose. Taurine has many uses as a supplement and you will find additional information under the tab above.

Uses of Taurine as a dietary supplement:**
People who can not, for one reason or another, make taurine in their bodies, will only be able to obtain it through supplementation and for these individuals it's very important.
Taurine may be recommended for congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, high cholestorol, hepatitis, and cystic fibrosis, seizures, autism, ADHD, disorders of the retina, diabetes, and alcoholism. It may be used as an antioxidant to protect cells from certain chemicals involving oxidation.
Taurine might also help with heart failure because it seems to lower blood pressure and calm the sympathetic nervouse system which is often active in people with high blood pressure and Congestive Heart Disease. The sympathetic nervous system is the part of the nervous system that responds to stress. **Information source: webMD
